a lot has been happening

a lot has been hapening over the last two weeks....new dynamics unfolding between between our resident artists. Oreet Ashery led an workshop......and we forgot to get in the translators for wu and paulo. thank fully perfomance happens more with body than with the spoken word (welllll not really....but valid for the workshop). Sonia Khurana could not join the workshop and Sushil Kumar came in late....he was not well....but stii tried for a token participation. good enery....but somehow did not really come together......still enabled the artists to explore their bodies and minds...................................hmmmmm all for now

Rohini,
I just read the article on "difficult art forms". I noticed that it was written in 2001 and I wonder if a performance artist wandering around London wearing a balaclava/ski mask today (post 7/7) wouldn't just get hit upon as a potential terrorist.
In thinking about the durability of performance art, or lack thereof, we come to questions of memory - something which is entirely subjective. So how can we have a judgement about the "effectiveness" of incomprehensible work, given that performance art endures solely in the memory of the viewers (unlike painting, for instance copies of which can be reproduced ad infinitum)? Andre Stitt mentioned that performance art is a catalyst, which I found a bit trite. I mean answering a phone can be a catalyst - moving you to a change of mood/action/emotion/task, etc. So - as an administrator do you see yourself as a performance artist (or is that your secret)? wel ro....you have kinda hit the nail....the question of judgeing the 'value' of performance has been chewing me since this residency has taken off...if tou look at literature the vadity of performance comes from calling itself 'art'. anwerins the phone can be a get 'catalyst'....but not necessaryly is performance unless the act is framed as 'art'.
guess after that one would have to engage with the intentionality of the framing to be able to be able to critically engage with it.

and about "if a performance artist wandering around London wearing a balaclava/ski mask today (post 7/7) wouldn't just get hit upon as a potential terrorist." well actually an artist may want to do act like that today.....maybe to challenge how we view a terriorist...she might choose to subvert her appreance through her gestures.....

the thing about performance and the experintiality...that is really pertinant....but too heavy for the post holi morning...will get back on that later

cheers
